Pench is the forest Rudyard Kipling fictionalised in The Jungle Book. Less famous than Tadoba but, for a first-time visitor, often the better day-trip.
Why Pench, not Tadoba?
Pench is closer (90 km vs Tadoba's 140), quieter (fewer Gypsies in the morning slot), and arguably more cinematic — the teak forest opens onto wide grasslands where leopards are reliably spotted. It is also less booked-out, so last-minute permits are easier.
Practicalities
- Drive: 90 km, ~2 hours, NH-44 north then a forest road into Turia or Khursapar gate.
- Safari slots: 6 AM and 3 PM. The morning slot has the best light and the best chance of a sighting.
- Permits: Bookable on the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department portal up to 120 days in advance. Same-day permits are sometimes available; ask our concierge.
- Cost: Approximately ₹1,800 per Indian adult including Gypsy share.
What You'll See
Tigers, but not as reliably as Tadoba — perhaps a 35% sighting probability in the morning slot. Leopards are easier (about 50%), wild dogs are a real possibility, and the bird life is exceptional from October through March.
How to Plan It
Stay the night at the property, leave at 4:30 AM with a packed breakfast, finish your safari by 10:30 AM, lunch in Khawasa village, and you're back at the lawn for high tea. Our concierge arranges the driver, picnic, and ice-water for the Gypsy.
Pair it with a Super Deluxe the night before — early-morning starts feel different from a canopy bed.
