Nagpur sits squarely at India's geographic centre, with the warmth of central India and the orange groves to prove it. Here are ten things worth doing on a long weekend.
1. Deekshabhoomi at Dawn
The white stupa where Dr. B. R. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism in 1956. Best at first light — the marble glows pink, the crowds are minimal, and the air still has the night's coolness.
2. Sitabuldi Fort
A British-era hilltop fort with sweeping views of central Nagpur. Note the limited opening dates — the second Saturday of each month and most national holidays.
3. Zero Mile Marker
A small obelisk that marks the geographic centre of British India. A five-minute photo stop, but the historical neat-trick is irresistible.
4. Saoji Mutton
Nagpur's signature cuisine — fiery, slow-cooked mutton in a coconut-and-poppy-seed gravy. Our concierge keeps a list of the city's three best Saoji shops.
5. Khindsi Lake
Central India's largest natural lake, an hour out of town. Pack a picnic and rent a paddle boat.
6. Ramtek Temple
A 600-year-old hilltop temple associated with Lord Rama's exile. The drive itself is the experience.
7. Pench Day-Safari
Kipling's "Jungle Book" forest, a comfortable two-hour drive away. Quieter than Tadoba; excellent for leopards and the elusive wild dog.
8. Orange-Country Drive
November to February, the orange harvest is in full swing. The Katol-Warud belt is striped with orchards; ask us about a half-day farm tour and tasting.
9. The Buti Patwardhan Heritage Walk
A two-hour guided walk through Mahal — the city's old quarter — past the Bhonsale Palace, Tekdi Ganesh Mandir, and the spice market.
10. Tarka Tola Bird Sanctuary
Just outside the city, a wetland that draws bar-headed geese and painted storks during winter. Best in early morning.
Looking for a base? Our boutique rooms are a 20-minute drive from most of these.
